Food Is Your Temptation

How many of you love food? Not like, but LOVE food? If you are anything like me, you are answering that question with a HELL YEA! It makes since to love food. Since birth, in addition to water, food has been your life supply. Whether you stay in bed all day or running a gazillion errands, your body will eventually send a signal in the form of a “stomach growl” to let you know that it needs some attention in the form of food. Since our bodies need food for survival, why is there an obesity epidemic in the U.S? Why are some adolescents developing high blood pressure? Why are people dying before the age of 55? Exercise helps alleviate these issues, yet why are there more overweight people that inhabit the gym or park? Two words: food temptation!

So food temptation is the reason for the majority of people becoming obese or overweight. Yet, there are people who are in-shape that are tempted to eat food as much as anybody. I am sure some of you people have a skinny friend that can eat every breadstick Olive Garden makes and not gain 1lb of fat! Why is that? Because, as the quote stated above, they learn to yield to temptation. Since we need food, we should embrace food. Besides, when we eat delicious food, our brains release chemicals that give us pleasure. I know I feel immense pleasure whenever I eat my girlfriend’s banana pudding or my mother’s cornbread! Nonetheless, I still maintain a body fat of 11-12% year around. So for those that think that the only way you will lose weight is by living off of salads (without salad dressing, eggs or meats) and tofu for the rest of life when there are so many delicious foods in the world to choose from, let me give you an alternative plan that I utilize to lose (and maintain) weight that you will actually enjoy. (Unless you don’t mind eating leaves for the rest of your life…lol)

Fasting has mainly been used by religious groups to cleanse the body. Nonetheless, upon further research, fasting is practiced by everybody! The reason I say that is because when we go to sleep, we go without food or drinks for that amount of time. Thus, when we get up, we eat breakfast. Think about it…we are “breaking the fast”, thus why it is called breakfast. But I will give you all a little secret on one of the ways it is easy for me to stay lean….I rarely eat breakfast anymore! They say breakfast is the most important meal of the today and I say bulls**t! The most important meal of the day is when you are truly hungry (i.e., stomach growling) and for most people, you can afford to wait till the afternoon to eat, especially if your goal is weight loss. Two methods of fasting I use is 24hr fasting 1 to 2 days per week (i.e, Choose a day or 2 out of the week to wait 24 hrs after your last meal to eat the next day) or a daily 8 hr window to eat (ex:eating meals from 12pm to 8pm). Also, I drink water throughout the day and do not snack. (Snacking calories add up quickly!) From 2006 to early 2010, I followed what all the so-called “health professionals” said by eating 5 to 6 small meals every 2 to 3 hours and ate healthy as possible. I was in decent shape but was not satisfied with my six-pack not showing and feeling guilty whenever I ate a “bad food.” When I started fasting in about April 2010, it took about 2-3 weeks to get my body adjusted to it. By sticking with it, it allowed me to yield to food temptation without feeling guilty, thus resulting in seeing my six-pack! And as you can see in my fitness photos, fasting does a body good!

Overall, you should embrace the notion that food is your temptation. We all have favorite foods we love, thus why all diets will fail eventually since you can’t resist them forever. While there are healthy foods that are tasty too (baked fish and grilled steak comes mind…lol), there is nothing wrong with having a few slices of pizza or chocolate cake. By fasting, you will be able to enjoy the favorite foods you love. Just take note of the following statement: If you consume fewer calories today than you did yesterday, the scale will show that you lost weight tomorrow. Fasting just make that whole process a whole hell of a lot simpler!
